Work in Progress

For the exhibition, One Night Only 2018, we intend to present a multimodal installation that ranges from digital photography, video, sculpture and text-based works. The installation socially revolves around a group of elderly Malay women also colloquially known as the ‘makcik’. The term is derived from the etymology of ‘mak’ (mother) and ‘cik’ (miss) but is simply translatable as ‘auntie’ in English.

We are interested in the ‘makcik’ worldview, specifically, how these women are able to interweave the politics of everyday living into one that is personalised and imbued with urban myths, horrifying accounts and sometimes, the supernatural. Here, we intend to represent such demographics beyond a stereotypical narrative, one often confined to spaces of the domestic, and compressed as humorous tropes (in the media). Based on their lived experience, we intend to subvert and infiltrate spaces of the curatorial by countering hegemonic narrative (i. e. sciences as legitimate) and present a nuanced representation of the ‘makciks’, shedding light on an alternative information network of a community.

Based on the illustration below, our installation will comprise photographic prints that stages accounts received during our fieldwork. This varies from strange experiences like tainted milk, synthesis of overlapping account of fruits contaminated with needles and etcetera. Also, there will be a video recording of an account by a ‘makcik’, a sculptural piece of steamed packet rice, and a visual mind map.
